It is important to clarify our understanding of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) [1]:

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process through which formal, non-formal and informal learning are measured, mediated for recognition across different contexts and certified against the requirements for credit, access, inclusion or advancement in the formal education and training system or workplace. (Source: National Policy for the Implementation of RPL: par 30).

The aim is to make it possible to obtain formal recognition for knowledge gained throughout life, such as in workplaces and own reading or experiences.  The RPL process also entails providing support to a candidate to ensure that knowledge is discovered and displayed in terms of a relevant qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

RPL is fast becoming a way to formalise learning where a person with actual experience and extended work expertise may not have been able to (throughout their career and work life) qualify themselves in their relevant work discipline or area of skill.

This screening assessment has been developed to assist you to determine your eligibility for RPL against the National Certificate: Generic Management at NQF Level 5.

The screening process is vital to the success of RPL as learners who don’t have adequate prior experience and knowledge will not be recognised and struggle with assessments.  Therefore, the level of learner to the level of qualification is also considered for RPL eligibility.
